Dear members,

We are pleased to share information around the 2022 UN Ocean Conference which will be held from 27 June – 1 July fully in-person in Lisbon. The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, will seek to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action and foster ambitious commitments towards the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

It will also provide an opportunity for all types of actors ranging from local and regional governments to national governments, civil society and stakeholders to ensure that their actions move towards protecting our oceans and natural resources in light of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021 – 2030.


Local and Regional Governments Special Forum – 25 June
 
As part of the activities organized within the framework of the UN Oceans Conference, a Local and Regional Governments Special Forum has been confirmed to take place on June 25^th, 2022 in Matosinhos, Portugal. The Special Forum will take place fully in-person as a full day event and will be hosted by the City of Matosinhos and organized in collaboration with UN DESA, the UN Global Compact, the Climate Champions Team and networks of local and regional governments gathered in the Global Taskforce. The event will count on the support of the co-hosts of the 2022 UN Ocean Conference – Portugal and Kenya.

The objective of the forum is to showcase successful experiences, challenges felt, and solutions found from local and regional governments regarding the implementation and follow up of SDG 14.

Sessions of the Oceans Conference, 27 June – 1 July

Please advise the UCLG World Secretariat if you plan on attending the Oceans Conference. The World Secretariat is in touch with the United Nations to explore opportunities for interventions from the constituency within the official Ocean Conference sessions.


How to join?

• Local and regional governments can participate in the conference and forum by following the steps described in the enclosed detailed briefing.
• Registration for the Local and Regional Governments Special Forum will be open until June 12^th.
• Registration for the UN Oceans Conference must be done on the UN’s platform: Indico by 3 June.
• Please inform the UCLG World Secretariat if you plan on attending the Oceans Conference and the Local and Regional Governments Special Forum.
