Call for candidatures: Co-Presidency of United Cities and Local Governments
Dear members,
Due to the resignation of the Mayor of Konya in view of national elections in Turkey, there is a vacancy in the UCLG Presidency. The Executive Bureau in Strasbourg agreed to open a call encouraging candidatures from the MEWA region and took note of the interest of the new Mayor of Konya to present his candidature.
Launched in 2004, United Cities and Local Governments is the global advocate and representative of democratic local government. It has members in over 140 countries across the world, bringing together individual cities, regional governments and national local government associations in one united global organisation.
United Cities and Local Governments has a Presidency composed of
up to 6 members. The Presidency is the principal representative of the World Organization and is elected by its World Council.
The Presidency, comprising the
President and up to 5 Co-Presidents, is elected by the World Council from among Local Government members for a renewable term between two ordinary sessions of the General Assembly. At least one of the above office-holders must be from an individual Local Government member, at least one from a national association and at least one from a member of the Metropolitan Section.
The President and Co-Presidents act on behalf of the World Organization, not of a specific Section.
It is strongly encouraged to take the principle of gender balance into account.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates should represent a paying local government member of UCLG.
- The member represented by the candidate will be up to date with the payment of their membership fees.
- According to the UCLG Constitution, the members of the Presidency shall hold a local electoral mandate. They must also be at the head of a) a local or regional government or b) a national association of local or regional governments.
- In order to advance in gender balance, female participation is strongly encouraged.
Candidacies must include:
- Short biography
- Manifesto or motivation letter

Candidacies must be presented by
15 September 2018. After validation of criteria, they will be posted on the

www.uclg.org. The election will take place at the World Council
on 5-6 November in Madrid.
