Dear members,
The promotion of inclusive gender equality has been on the agenda of our joint efforts as a constituency for many years now. Our actions have revolved around increasing the active participation and empowerment of women in decision-making, gender-mainstreaming, and amplifying the Feminist Municipal Movement, which calls for new forms of feminist leadership, putting care, empathy, solidarity and proximity at the heart of policies and actions.
As such, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a key annual moment for our constituency to highlight the critical role of local and regional governments in promoting inclusive and gender equitable communities. In 2024, the 68th Session of CSW will take place from 11 to 22 March 2024, in the UN Headquarters, New York City.
The priority theme is “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective” and the review theme is “Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls”.
As is traditionally the case, UCLG will be facilitating the mobilization of our constituency, and in particular, women elected representatives, to ensure our agenda is heard at the CSW through a Local and Regional Governments Day held within the framework of CSW and, tentatively, a Side event and / or NGO CSW68 Parallel Event. We will inform you as soon as possible once dates have been set, but in the meantime can inform you that they will take place during the first week of the CSW (between 11-15 March 2024).
FOR ACTION:
Participation: Please kindly inform the UCLG World Secretariat by 12 January if you plan on attending the above-mentioned in-person events.
Registration: There will be possibility for a very limited number of local and regional leaders to register through UCLG for the formal UN CSW, though we encourage registration via national delegations as this will provide delegates more access to official sessions. Furthermore, official registration will not be required for the Local and Regional Governments’ Day or in-person Parallel event in the framework of the NGO CSW Forum.
Calendar of activities: We would like to compile a calendar of relevant events and opportunities during the CSW68, therefore please kindly share any activities or plans you may have. We will gladly share the combined calendar, together with any other timely up-dates.
